Jacob Roved Quintet - Dawn
(CD)
Jacob Roved Quintet was formed in 2008 and has previously released the album Remembering Billy Strayhorn (Gateway 2015), commemorating the 100th anniversary of Duke Ellington’s famous collaborator – one of only few significant LGBT artists in jazz history. Remembering Billy Strayhorn was well received by critics and has played on radio in several continents. Jacob Roved Quintet has given concerts in France, Sweden, and Denmark, including several international jazz festivals.
The music on Dawn explores the state of awakening. At dawn, we often find ourselves on an “event horizon”, a state where one is gradually becoming awake but at the same time drawn back into the state of dreams. This realm on the outskirts of perception offers views into our backcountry of passions and emotions. While uncontrollable and sometimes scary, this backcountry is tantalizing with promises of magic and mysterious endeavors. Who has not experienced taking the “last exit before dawn”, another dive back into a dream, before waking up? Some of the music on Dawn is literally a product of this state. Many people will recognize waking up with a vivid experience of a dream. For composer and band leader Jacob Roved, such experiences are sometimes musical and result in new compositions, such as the album’s final track “A short moment”.
